Usneoides (Spanish Moss)

Usneoides (Spanish Moss)

Tillandsia, or more commonly known as air plants, are the perfect plant for someone who doesn't have a green thumb. Air plants thrive without soil and feed off of the air, making them one of the most low maintenance plants out there.

Usneoides is also known as Spanish Moss and although it may not look it, it is another type of air plant. It is native to Central America, Southern parts of the U.S. and South America, and can be found growing from tree limbs. It's slender leaves grow in a chain like fashion, making it the perfect hanging air plant. Its color can vary between green, grey and brown depending on the amount of light and water it recieves.

Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid direct sun and dark shady areas.

There are two ways to water air plants, misting and soaking. A good rule of thumb is to mist the air plants 2-3 times a week in the summer months, allowing the plants to completely dry in between each watering.

How often you water the air plant will differ based on your climate. If your climate is dry, you may have to water it more often. If your climate is humid, you may find yourself watering it even less.

You can also soak the plants in water about once a month for 10 minutes or so. It's important to completely dry the plant before putting it back in its place. You can dry out the plants by hanging it upside down or patting it dry. To avoid root rot, make sure the base of the air plant is completely dried out.
